Job description

This position is responsible for the trading of basic chemicals in North America. This position will be assigned a specific geographic region and support all customers and suppliers within that region. The Trader will be responsible for implementing the business development strategy laid out by the North American Leadership team.

Responsibilities and Mandate

  • Generate and develop new business to meet specified sales volume, gross margin and sale goals immediately.
  • Understand logistical challenges; contacts with logistics providers is an asset.
  • Understand the business strategy and execute trades that positively impact the bottom line.
  • Prepare and present sales proposals.
  • Plan and manage sales territory.
  • Seek opportunities to expand business with current clients that maximize revenue.
  • Develop sales materials including spreadsheets, correspondence, sales proposals, presentations and internal documents.
  • Have a passion for sales and be familiar with the sales cycle from lead generation to closing business.
  • Ensure that client paperwork is complete, accurate, organized and on-time.

Background and Business Challenges/Success Factors

The Sales Manager/Trader will be a key member of the selling unit of the Basic Chemicals Division in North America. This position will leverage new and existing contacts to buy and sell products within the division’s product portfolio. This role will also be the customer and client facing arm of the division that will be responsible for communicating information regarding company products, services and policies to new and existing clients. This position will be tasked with expanding and maintaining sales channels within the specified region of North America. An ideal candidate will have a hunter mentality and have the ability to close deals. A strong commercial background is required and excellent negotiation skills are a must.  The candidate must be passionate about selling with the drive and persistence to close business. Candidates are required to have an existing book of relevant customers and be ready to hit the ground selling.

Main tasks and projects

  • Design and achieve sales goals within a specified geographical region
  • Possesses and maintains thorough knowledge of Basic Chemicals industry, products and applications
  • Develop and maintain relationships with clients in a specified geographical region by providing support, information, and guidance; translating needs into market opportunities.
  • Continually gather information on local competition and business climate within the region; communicates information to management and others as needed.
  • Abide by all applicable local, state, federal and international rules and laws.
  • Build a strong financial case for projects.
  • Ensure that duties, responsibilities, authority and accountability of all persons reporting are defined and understood.
  • Investigate and manage customer complaints, recommend solutions, and respond to customers.
  • Ensure supplier quality and customer satisfaction with all CellMark or partner products.
  • Prepare any required documentation for import/export needs.
  • Provides timely and accurate reports as required.
  • Attend and participate in business/trade events that impact business unit.
  • Attend and participate in team strategic sales meetings.
  • Ensure CellMark values and operating procedures are followed at every level of the organization.

Criteria for evaluation

The specific KPIs that will evaluate the success of this new position remain to be developed and agreed upon internally and with the incumbent. However, in general terms:

  • The financial results of the region over time will be the key metric to evaluate the success of the position
  • Sales volume, gross margins achieved
  • The number of new profitable business channels
  • The successful and timely completion of assigned projects

Candidate Profile


  • Bachelor’s Degree (B.A. or B.S.) or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • MA Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or MBA is an asset


  • 3-5 years of experience in sales or commodity trading role
  • Demonstrated success in sales or trading
  • 2+ years experience with chemical industry or commodity trading is an asset


  • Excellent communicator comfortable with customers and suppliers
  • Must be a self-starter with drive and ability to create business
  • Strong closing skills
  • Experienced with sales negotiations and their processes
  • Strong commercial trading experience
  • Familiar with business tools: Microsoft Office Suite and other basic office tools
  • Commitment to excellence and high standards
  • English
  • Spanish/Portuguese

Other requirements

  • The position location is flexible within North and South America (Gulf Coast of US preferred)
  • Travelling will be frequent and represent a minimum of 25 % of the employee’s time
